Chapter 24, Problem 37P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Based on the general mechanism for the first stage of acid catalyzed acetal hydrolysis, a reasonable explanation is to be suggested for the given observations.

Concept Introduction:

Acid catalyzed hydrolysis involves an acid catalyst.

Acetals are derivatives of aldehydes or ketones having an alkoxy group.

An oxygen atom of the acetal is protonated using this acid catalyst forming a good leaving group.

When the leaving group breaks away from the carbon atom, a carbocation is formed.

The stability of the carbocation formed, determines the rate of hydrolysis of the acetal.

The ketone shown was prepared in a three-step sequence from ethyl trifluoroacetate. The first step in the sequence involved treating ethyl trifluoroacetate with ammonia to give compound A. Compound A was in turn converted to the desired ketone by way of compound B. Fill in the missing reagents in the sequence shown, and give the structures of compounds A and B.
The p-toluenesulfonate derived from (R)-2-octanol and p-toluenesulfonyl chloride was allowed to react with sodium benzenethiolate (C6H5SNa). Give the structure, including stereochemistry and the appropriate R or S descriptor, of the product.
Thalidomide is a chiral molecule and it was identified that the R-isomerproduced the sedative properties whereas the S-isomer produced the teratogenic effects.Identify the chiral centre in the thalidomide molecule and, using your knowledge of enolisation, illustrate mechanistically, and explain, why there would be no benefit to a patient taking the chirally pure R-isomer of the drug to avoid the sideeffects of the other enantiomer.
