Concept introduction:

A carbon atom that has four non-equivalent atoms or groups attached to it is known as the chiral carbon atom. Chiral carbon centres are also called as asymmetric or stereogenic centres.

A Fisher projection of a sugar is said to be D-sugar and L-sugar configuration, if the OH group present on the stereogenic centre are on the right and the left side respectively.

The Howarth formula of sugars is represented by the ring containing oxygen atom and the anomeric carbon atom at its right side.
