Chapter 24, Problem 44P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Given the structure of the substrate Compound A, the structural formula, including stereochemistry, of the product of oxidation with periodic acid, Compound B, C7H12O4, is to be determined. The structural formula, including stereochemistry, of Compound C, C4H8O4, formed on hydrolysis of Compound B is to be determined. The structural formula, including stereochemistry, of the product Compound D, C4H6O4, obtained by the oxidation of C with bromine in water is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Periodic acid oxidizes 1, 2-difunctional groups likevicinal diols, replacing the carbon-carbon bond with a hydroxyl group. If a hydroxyl group is already present on the oxidized carbon, the resulting geminal diol loses a molecule of water to form a carbonyl group.

Acid hydrolysis of cyclic acetals yields geminal diols, with the hydroxyl groups on the same side.

Bromine oxidizes the cyclic form of carbohydrates to a lactone ring.

Wolff-Kishner reduction of compound W gave compound A. Treatment of A with m-chloroperbenzoic acid gave B which on reduction with LiAH4 gave C. Oxidation of compound C with chromic acid gave D (C9H14O). Suggest the structures for A, B, C, and D.
Compound A has the molecular formula C14H25Br and was obtained by reaction of sodium acetylide (HC≡CNa) )with 1,12-dibromododecane. On treatment of compound A with sodium amide, it was converted to compound B (C14H24). Ozonolysis of compound B gave the diacid HO2C(CH2)12CO2H. Catalytic hydrogenation of compound B over Lindlar palladium gave compound C (C14H26), while hydrogenation over platinum gave compound D (C14H28). Sodium-ammonia reduction of compound B gave compound E (C14H26). Both C and E yielded O═CH(CH2)12CH═O on ozonolysis. Assign structures to compound A through E so as to be consistent with the observed transformations.
Compound A is first treated with ylide Y and then reacted with Rh and hydrogen gas. Using the spectroscopic data provided, what is the structure of Compound A?
