Explanation

OBD II systems detect the failure of different parts of the engine system with the help of different types of monitors. Some monitors detect the emission levels continuously whereas the others operate when a particular defect is detected or the enable criteria are satisfied. The monitors that are used in an OBD II system are described below:

Misfire Monitor: When an engine cylinder misfires, due to lack of proper combustion hydrocarbons are released from the cylinder. Misfiring also reduces the engine power. An OBD II detects the engine misfire by monitoring the speed of the crankshaft.

HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) Monitor: It detects the rich-to-lean and lean-to-rich oxygen sensors and looks for excess high voltage. They also help in increasing the temperature up to operating temperature within a short time.

Evaporative Emission System Monitor (EVAP): It commands the PCM to check the fuel system’s ability to hold pressure and draw vapor for combustion...
