Introduction:
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes two infections- varicella (chicken pox) and shingles (herpes zoster). Because the appearance of both infections is very different, it was believed for a long time that these infections are caused by two different agents. However, it was later found that the same virus caused both these infections.
