Chapter 25, Problem 11PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

Draw a well-labeled graph mentioning the geological eras and time periods of the Dromaeosauridae.

Introduction:

The Dromaeosauridae is the family of theropod dinosaurs. They were small to medium in size and are known to have flourished in the Cretaceous period. They first appeared in the Jurassic period, around 167 million years ago (mya). The Cretaceous period is defined as a geological period that existed around 145 mya at the beginning of the Paleogene period 66 mya.

Why do you think baleen whales are generally larger than toothed whales? Why are they capable of growing larger than even the largest dinosaurs?
Because of selective forces, the dinosaurs were superbly adapted to their environments. After the dinosaurs became extinct, the small mammals that had been relatively unimportant animals in the background flourished and evolved into many new types, including the line that led to human beings. It is unlikely that these new types would have ever evolved had not the dinosaurs disappeared. If the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by an extraterrestrial impact, did it matter how well they were adapted to their environment? What does this suggest about the starting cause in the evolutionary success of these new types of mammals?
Explain the difference between generalized and specialized characteristics. What are examples of each in terms of the adaptive potential? Define the term “adaptive radiation” and explain why it is important to the principle of evolution. Why was adaptive radiation especially important to mammals’ eventual rapid evolutionary success and diversification? What are some of the different groups of mammals?
