Chapter 25, Problem 25.25P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The product that is immediately formed in Equation 25-49 after reaction with excess NBS is to be drawn.

Concept introduction:

The benzylic bromide can be prepared by radical bromination with reagent NBS (N-Bromosuccinimide) using radical initiator like benzoyl peroxide. The reaction proceeds through the formation of benzylic radical, which is more stable than the other radical as it is resonance stabilized by conjugation of benzene π bonds. Thus, bromination takes place at benzylic position, and, major product formed is benzylic bromide.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

What kind of reaction takes place in the second reaction in Equation 25-49 is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The substrate having bromine at benzylic position undergoes elimination reaction in the presence of a base like amine and forms double bond in the product. The reaction proceeds either by E2 or E1 mechanism.
