The compounds
It is to be explained why isotopically substituted methanol is formed in the reaction (b), but not in reactions (a) and (c).
Concept introduction:
When a labeled nucleophile is used in a substitution reaction, the appearance of the labelled atom in the products depends on the bonds which are broken. The reaction of nucleophile depends on the steric hindrance and the basicity of the substrate.
