Chapter 2.5, Problem 5CC
Summary Introduction
To determine:
How many molecules of ghrelin are present in 1L of blood if concentration of appetite regulating hormone ghrelin is present about 1.3 x 10-10 in a blood of a fasting person?
Introduction:
Appetite regulating hormone is also known as hunger hormone. Hunger hormone is of two types: leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone made up of fat cells that help to reduce the appetite and are responsible for weight loss while ghrelin raises the appetite and also involve in gain of body weight. Ghrelin is made up of 28 amino acids produced in stomach.

Calculate glucose concentration.
Na (sodium) and glucose secondary active
transport.
Na transport (which drive glucose import)
G=R*T*In(Na in/ Na out)+Z*F*Y(psi symbol)
Na in=14mM
Na out=145MM
Z=+1
F=96.5 KJ/V*mol
Y(psi)=-0.05V
What is the glucose in and out
concentration?
Please be very through when explaining
this calculation.
(I am stuck at why the energy sign changes
from negative to positive when using the
calculated energy from sodium to glucose)
Intestinal epithelial cells pump glucose into the cell against its concentration gradient using the Na-glucose symporter. Recall
that the Na* concentration is significantly higher outside the cell than inside the cell. The symporter couples the "downhill"
transport of two Na* ions into the cell to the "uphill" transport of glucose into the cell.
If the Nat concentration outside the cell ([Na lout) is 141 mM and that inside the cell ([Na* lin) is 19.0 mM, and the cell
potential is -52.0 mV (inside negative), calculate the maximum energy available for pumping a mole of glucose into the cell.
Assume the temperature is 37 °C.

O T1 is most likely a cell that expresses a high affinity transporter for glucose. T2 is most likely a cell that expresses a high affinity transporter for glucose.
