Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure of allopurinol with the structures of hypoxanthine and xanthine has to be compared.
Concept introduction:
Uric acid is the end product of the breakdown of purine nucleosides and urate ion is formed by the loss of its acidic hydrogen. After a number of enzymatic steps, adenosine produces xanthine which is then converted to uric acid.
Gout is the condition by which the uric acid production increases and the treatment of gout relies on allopurinol. Allopurinol is a structural analog of hypoxanthine which is a precursor of xanthine in the formation of urate.
