Rate of Growth The rate of growth G in the weight of a fish is a function of the weight w of the fish. For the North Sea cod, the relationship is given by
Here w is measured in pounds and G in pounds per year. The maximum size for a North Sea cod is about 40 pounds.
a. Make a graph of G versus w.
b. Find the greatest rate of growth among all cod weighing at least 5 pounds.
c. Find the greatest rate of growth among all cod weighing at least 25 pounds.

- Immigration The following graph shows immigrationin thousand to the United States has varied over the past century. Source: Homeland Security. a. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the first half of the century from 1905 to 1955. b. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the second half of the century from 1955 to 2005. c. Find the average annual rate of change in immigration for the entire century from 1905 to 2005. d. Average your answers to part a and b, and compare the result with your answer from part c. Will these always be equal for any two time periods? e. If the annual average rate of change for entire century continues, predict the number of immigrants in 2009. Compare answer to the actual number of 1,130,818 immigrants.arrow_forwardArctic Foxes The age-weight relationship of female Arctic foxes caught in Svalbard, Norway, can be estimated by the function Mt=3102e-e-0.022t-56, where t is the age of the fox in days and Mt is the weight of the fox in grams. Source: Journal of Mammalogy. a. Estimate the weight of a female fox that is 200 days old. b. Use Mt to estimate the largest size that a female fox can attain. Hint: Find limtMt. c. Estimate the age of a female fox when it has reached 80% of its maximum weight. d. Estimate the rate of change in weight of an Arctic fox that is 200 days old. Hint: Recall that Dteft=f'teft. e. Using a graphing calculator to graph Mt and then describe the growth pattern. f. Use the table function on a graphing calculator or a spreadsheet to develop a chart that shows the estimated weight and growth rate of female foxes for days 50,100,150,200,250, and 300.arrow_forwardMosteller Formula for Body Surface Area: Body surface area is an important piece of medical information because it is a factor in temperature regulation as well as some drug level determinations. The Mosteller formula gives one way of estimating body surface area B in square meters. The formula uses the weight w in kilograms and the height h in centimeters. The relation is B=hw60 In this exercise, we consider people who are 190 centimeters tall. a. Write a formula for B as a function of w. b. Make a graph of B versus w. includes weights up to 100 kilograms. c. Is the graph you made in part b concave up or concave down? d. In this part, we consider the effect of weight gain on men who are 190 centimeters tall. Would the weight gain have a greater effect on surface area for a lighter man or for a heavier man?arrow_forward
- Temperature The graph shows the temperature T in degrees Celsius as a function of the altitude h in feet when an inversion layer is over Southern California. An inversion layer is formed when air at a higher altitude, say 300 ft, is warmer than the air at sea level, even though air normally is cooler with increasing altitude. Estimate and interpret the average rate of change in temperature for the following changes in altitude. a. 1000to3000ft b. 1000to5000ft c. 3000to9000ft d. 1000to9000ft e. At what altitude at or below 7000ft is the temperature highest ? Lowest ? How would your answer change if 7000ft is changed to 10,000ft? f. At what altitude is the temperature the same as it is at 1000ft?arrow_forwardLIFE SCIENCE APPLICATIONS Metabolic Rate The basal metabolic rate in kcal/day for large anteaters is given by y=f(x)=19.7x0.753, where x is the anteaters weight in kilograms. Source: Wild-life Feeding and Nutrition. a. Find the basal metabolic rate for anteaters with the following weights. i. 5kg ii. 25kg b. Suppose the anteaters weight is given in pounds rather than kilograms. Given that 1lb=0.454kg, find a function x=g(z) giving the anteaters weight in kilograms if z is the animals weight in pounds. c. Write the basal metabolic rate as a function of the weight in pounds in the form y=azb by calculating f(g(z)).arrow_forward
