Explanation

In stainless steels, chromium is added as a corrosion resistive element. When the steel is heated in the temperature range of about 427°C to 816°C, the carbon present in the steel reacts with chromium and forms chromium carbide.

These carbide structures dissolve completely in austenite phase of steel and precipitates at the grain boundaries resulting into reduction of corrosion resistance properties of steel. Such process is called carbide precipitation.
