Chapter 26.17, Problem 25P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pattern of the methyl group orientation in the β sheet composed of only alanine residues is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

A β sheet is a secondary structural unit of peptides and proteins. It is composed of the hydrogen bonded polypeptide molecules; the hydrogen bonded through the NH group from one chain and C=O group from another chain.

The geometry of the peptide bond is planar, with the two alpha carbons in anti conformation.

Why is the amino acid proline not commonly found in alpha-helices or beta-sheets?  In what secondary structure might proline be commonly found?
The pKa value for adenine (N-1) is 4.2. Using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, calculate the base/acid ratio at pH 7. In 30 words or less, what is the significance of the predominant form at pH 7 in relation to the formation of the DNA double helix?
Histones are proteins found in eukaryotic cell nuclei. They wrap DNA around itself, thereby compacting the phosphate-rich DNA the nuclei. Histones have a very high pI, usually around 10.8. What amino acid residues must exist in relatively large numbers in Histones? In what way do these residues contribute to the strong binding of Histones to DNA? Where do you expect the majority of these residues to be situated on the histone protein structure?
