Chapter 27, Problem 7A
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Influenza virus belongs to class V that contains minus single stranded segmented RNA as their genetic material. They are enveloped virus that contains an antigen on their envelope. Influenza virus is the causative agent of flu. They have ability to change their surface antigens by forming a new combination of antigen (mixture of antigen) through the process called as antigenic shift and they also mutate their antigen genes to form new surface antigen. This process is known as antigenic drift

Which of the following statements about viruses is false? a. Viruses require a host cell to reproduce. b. Viruses are sensitive to interferons. c. Viral infections can generally be controlled with antibiotics. d. Viruses encode their own genome.
A researcher, studying two different animal viruses (A and B) that infect the same cell type, digests away all the protein and transfers the nucleic acid directly into the host cell.  Only virus B causes the infection. This suggests:        a. Virus A is likely to be a naked virus.         b. Virus A is likely to be an enveloped virus.         c. Virus A is likely to be a -ssRNA virus.         d. Virus A is likely to be a +ssRNA virus.         e. Virus A is likely to be a dsDNA virus.  And now explain why.
The drugs used against HIV in AIDS therapy are not effective against the flu because a. HIV is an RNA virus and influenza is a DNA virus. b. HIV is a DNA virus and influenza is an RNA virus. c. the two viruses have different-sized genomes. d. the proteins targeted by HIV drugs are not found in influenza.
