Chapter 27.6, Problem 16WDYL
Summary Introduction

To describe:

The rate of cholesterol synthesis in response to high dietary intake of cholesterol and to determine the fate of cholesterol following its synthesis.

Concept introduction:

The fats are disintegrated into fatty acids and glycerol. The fatty acids enter Krebs’s cycle and get involved in beta-oxidation where its carbons are removed and Acetyl CoA (acetyl coenzyme A) are formed. The cholesterol molecules are formed by the utilization of Acetyl CoA molecules.

Students have asked these similar questions
How do diet and de novo synthesis of cholesterol regulate each other?
Why must cholesterol be transported through the bloodstream in lipoprotein particles?
Homocystinuria is caused by a defect in cystathionine beta-synthase (or 13-synthase), which leads to an accumulation of homocysteine in the blood. This accumulation causes symptoms such as a tall, thin frame, flushed cheeks, and osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). These individuals should limit their intake of proteins that contain methionine, such as egg whites. Using your understanding of biochemistry, explain why people with Homocystinuria should not consume egg whites and other such proteins.
