A 75-hp compressor in a facility that operates at full load for 2500 h a year is powered by an electric motor that has an efficiency of 93 percent. If the unit cost of electricity is $0.11/kWh, the annual electricity cost of this compressor is
- (a) $14,300
- (b) $15,380
- (c) $16,540
- (d) $19,180
- (e) $22,180

One method of meeting the extra electric power demand at peak periods is to pump some water from a large body of water (such as a lake) to a reservoir at a higher elevation at times of low demand and to generate electricity at times of high demand by letting this water run down and rotate a turbine (i.e., convert the electric energy to potential energy and then back to electric energy). For an energy storage capacity of 5 × 106 kWh, determine the minimum amount of water that needs to be stored at an average elevation (relative to the ground level) of 75 m.
A high reservoir holds water. Water travels from this reservoir down via a big conduit to a turbine
and then down a second, similar-sized conduit to create electricity. The pressure is 172.4 kPa at
a location in the conduit 89.5 m above the turbine and 89.6 kPa at a level 5 m below the turbine.
The flow rate of water is 0.800 m3/s. The turbine's shaft produces 658 kW of power. The density
of water is 1000 kg/m3. Calculate the friction loss in the turbine in J/kg if the turbine's efficiency
in transferring the mechanical energy given up by the fluid to the turbine shaft is 89 percent (t =
0.89). It is worth noting that in the mechanical-energy-balance equation, Ws equals the output of
the turbine's shaft multiplied by t.
Note: Use the equation provided below

mechanical energy balance is reduced to:

The utility company is selling electric power for $0.06/kWh at night, and $0.13/kWh for power produced in the day. Company WaterCO builds a large reservoir 50m above lake level to pump water from the lake to the reservoir at night, and then letting the water flow from the reservoir back into the lake during the day; creating power as a pump-motor operation and a turbine-generator for reverse flow. Here, the water flow rate of 2 m3/s is used in either direction and the irreversible head loss of the piping system is 4m. The combined pump-motor and turbine-generator efficiencies are 80% each. If the system operates for 10 hours each in the pump and turbine modes during a normal day, what is the potential revenue this pump-turbine system can generate per year?
