Concept explainers
To determine: The gene involved in the galactosemia.
Concept introduction:
Galactosemia is a genetic disorder of galactose
To explain: The normal function of GALT and how this gene affected in Galactosemia.
Concept introduction:
Galactosemia is a genetic disorder of galactose metabolism. Generally, when a person consumes food that contains lactose, the lactose breaks down in the body to form galactose, and galactose is then converted into glucose. An individual with galactosemia is unable to synthesize glucose from galactose. Thus, if galactose is accumulated in the body, it can affect brain, liver, eyes, and kidneys.
To explain: How galctosemia might be treated through gene therapy.
