Textbook Question
Chapter 3, Problem 60Q
Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) play an important role in stratospheric ozone depletion.
- a. Why do PSCs form more often over Antarctica than in the Arctic?
- b. Reactions occur more quickly on the surface of PSCs than in the atmosphere. One such reaction is that of two species that do not deplete ozone, hydrogen chloride and chlorine nitrate (ClONO2), which react to produce a chlorine molecule and nitric acid (HNO3). Write the chemical equation.
- c. The chlorine molecule produced does not deplete ozone either. However, when sunlight returns to the Antarctic in the springtime, it is converted to a species that does. Show how this happens using a chemical equation.

As of the writing of this text, EPA standards limit atmospheric ozone levels in urban environments to 84 ppb. How many moles of ozone would there be in the air above Los Angeles County (an area about 4000 square miles; consider a height of 100 m above the ground) if ozone was at this concentration?
Why are CHF2Cl and CH2ClCF3 important for stratospheric ozone depletion?
pls consider its lifetime.
Why is stratospheric ozone beneficial to life on Earth, whereas tropospheric (ground-level) ozone is not?
