Concept explainers
The relation between the heavy elements present on the Earth today and supernovae.
Answer to Problem 15RQ
99% of the entire element present on Earth today was created during supernovas billions of years ago.
Explanation of Solution
Supernova is the largest explosion that humans have ever encountered. This explosion takes place when a white dwarf is triggered into a runaway of nuclear fusion.
All the elements on the Earth present today besides hydrogen and a small amount of helium were created during the events of supernovas that happened billions of years ago. Last recent supernova was encountered in the Milky Way galaxy known as Kepler's Supernova in 1604.
Conclusion:
Therefore, 99% of the entire element present on earth today was created during supernovas billions of years ago.
