Concept explainers
The location of majority of stars in H-R diagram.
Answer to Problem 8RQ
The majority of stars are located in the diagonal band.
Explanation of Solution
The Hertzsprung–Russell diagram is a plot between the luminosity of stars and the surface temperature of the stars. The main stars that are the brightest stars, bluest stars, and the coolest stars are dim. Most of the stars are plotted diagonally. This sequence of the diagonal band is called the main sequence.
These main sequence stars generate energy by fusing hydrogen to helium. This band also includes Sun. The hottest main sequence of stars is the brightest. The bluest stars and the coolest stars are the dimmest stars.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the majority of stars are located in the diagonal band.
