Textbook Problem

For experimental evidence particularly of previously unobserved phenomena, to be taken seriously it must be reproducible or of sufficiently high quality that a single observation is meaningful. Supernova 1987A is not reproducible. How do we know observations of it were valid? The fifth force is not broadly accepted. Is this due to lack of reproducibility or poor−quality experiments (or both)? Discuss why forefront experiments are more subject to observational problems than those involving established phenomena.

To determine

The validation of the observation that Supernova 1987A is not reproducible. Whether the reason for rejection of fifth force is lack of reproducibility or a poor-quality experiment? Also, state the reason due to which forefront experiments are more subject to observational problems in comparison to the conventional ones.

Explanation

Supernova 1987A led to the creation of essential elements for the creation and survival of living beings on earth such as gases like carbon, hydrogen and helium. It is the most recent Supernova in current time but there must have been several other Supernova earlier to the creation of Supernova 1987A. However, it is believed that with the Supernova 1987A, the creation of earth started. The chain of nuclear reactions observed some 160,000 years ago with in the nuclear plasma of SN1987A caused the explosion of star. The explosion mechanism of SNe and neutron star involved in the SN explosion is not clear and thus it cannot be stated whether Supernova 1987A is reproducible or not...
