Chapter 35, Problem 35.12CQ
(a) Under what conditions is a mirage formed? While driving on a hot day, sometimes you see what appears to be water on the road far ahead. When you arrive at the location of the water, however, the road is perfectly dry. Explain this phenomenon, (b) The mirage called fata morgana often occurs over water or in cold regions covered with snow or ice. It can cause islands to sometimes become visible, even though they are not normally visible because they are below the horizon due to the curvature of the Earth. Explain this phenomenon.

Rowan is walking in a shallow, clear bay, in still water just over her knees. When she looks down at her feet in the sand, she notes that they appear closer to her than usual. Normally, when she tips her head forward to look at her feet, her feet are 1.60 m from her eyes. How far away do her feet appear when they are under 0.60 m of water?
A transparent sphere of radius 10m is filled with air (n air=1.00) and then submerged underwater (n water=1.33). While you observe from the inside of the sphere, a fish appears to be 1.00m away from the sphere's surface. Ignoring any optical effect due to the material used in the sphere, what is the actual distance of the fish from the surface of the sphere for an observer in the water?
When a fish looks up at an angle of 45 degrees with the horizon, does it see the sky or the reflection of the bottom beneath? Explain why.
