Chapter 36, Problem 17TYK
Summary Introduction

Introduction: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a vital element for the plants to undergo photosynthesis. It is converted into energy by the green plants. It is present in the atmosphere abundantly in the form of gas. The plants use energy from the sunlight to unite with water and CO2 that stores energy. The oxygen is the byproduct of this reaction called photosynthesis, which is released into the atmosphere.

Why do land plants have stomates (sometimes called stomata)? a. To allow plants to take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. b. All of the choices are true; none are false. c. To control water loss while allowing for the uptake of some raw materials of photosynthesis. d. They allow the plant to have some control over transpiration rates.
To which of the two lighting conditions would you expose seedlings if you wanted to maximize the rate of photosynthesis in the plants as well as minimizing your costs for electricity to light the plants in the greenhouse?   A. Low light only.   B. Moderate light only.   C. Low light for the first 12 hours and then moderate light afterwards.   D. Moderate light for the first 12 hours and then low light afterwards.
Using the graph comparing photosynthetic rate and absorption of different wavelengths of light, what can be concluded?    a) The photosynthesis rate at 550 nm is the highest b) Chlorophyll a absorbs wavelengths at both ends of the spectrum c) Chlorophyll b is associated with the greatest rate of photosynthesis. d) Carotenoids absorb the narrowest range of wavelengths of light
