Introduction:
DNA and RNA are the molecules in which the entire genetic information of the cell is stored. The DNA strand comprises 4 nitrogenous bases arranged on a backbone of deoxyribose and phosphate. The nitrogenous bases include Thymine, Adenine, Cytosine, and Guanine. The RNA strand is slightly different. It contains nitrogenous bases arranged on a backbone of ribose phosphate instead of deoxyribose phosphate. The nitrogenous bases are the same except for Thymine, which is replaced by Uracil in an RNA strand. DNA is protected in the nucleus, where it transcribes RNA molecules for protein synthesis and processing.

- Adenine is a: a. nucleoside b. purine c. pyrimidine d. nucleotide e. basearrow_forwardChemical analysis shows that a nucleic acid sample contains A, U, C, and G. Is this DNA or RNA? Why?arrow_forwardDNA in the form of a double helix must be associated with cations, usually Mg²+ . Why is this requirement the case?arrow_forward
- Cytosine makes up 42% of the nucleotides in a sample of DNA from an organism. Approximately what percentage of the nucleotides in this sample will be thymine?arrow_forwardGelatin is composed of a small amount of protein in a large amount of water. Explain why gelatin is a solid.arrow_forwardA segment of DNA containing 20 base pairs includes 7 guanine residues. How many adenine residues are in the segment? How many uracil residues are in the segment?arrow_forward
- Hydrogen bonds are important in DNA replication and transcription. They are relatively weak chemical bonds. Why is this a desirable feature for DNA?arrow_forwardThere are four types of nucleotides in DNA molecules. Which of the following is NOT one of the four types of DNA nucleotides? O Adenine O Cytosine O Guanine O Thymine O Valinearrow_forwardIf the GC content of a DNA molecule is 60%, what are the molar percentages of the four bases (G, C, T, A)?arrow_forward
- DNA and RNA are chemically very similar but are distinguished, in large part, by the presence of a 2’-OH group in RNA and a 2’-H group in DNA. Why do you suppose that both DNA and RNA have 3’-OH groups and we do not typically find nucleic acids within cells that have 3’-H groups?arrow_forwardThe following are components of DNA except: ribose deoxyribose phospate purine basesarrow_forwardA DNA segment has a total of 1000 nucleotides, out of which 240 of them are adenine containing nucleotides. How many pyrimidine bases does this DNA segment possess?arrow_forward
