Concept explainers
A farmer urges his horse to pull a wagon. The horse refuses, saying to try would be futile for it would contradict Newton’s third law. The horse concludes that she can’t exert greater force on the wagon than the wagon exert on her, and therefore won’t be able to accelerate the wagon. What is your explanation to convince the horse to pull?
The explanation to convince the horse to pull the wagon.
Answer to Problem 9TE
The explanation to convince the horse to pull the wagon is that the horse can accelerate the wagon if she exerts more force on the ground.
Explanation of Solution
The horse says correct about Newton’s third law that equal and opposite force will act between the wagon and horse. The action-reaction pair will be produced when the horse tries to pull the wagon. The farmer can convince the horse by telling her that the action and reaction force will act on a different object, and thus can’t cancel out each other. In order to move the wagon, the horse must exert more force on the ground. The ground will also exert a greater reaction force on the horse, which will help to move in the forward direction. So, more the force exerted on the ground more efficiently horse can pull the wagon.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the explanation to convince the horse to pull the wagon is that the horse can accelerate the wagon if she exerts more force on the ground.
