Chapter 40, Problem 12PIAT
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Whether the data shown in the graph support the hypothesis that aluminum interferes with osmoregulation in freshwater fish or not.

Introduction:

The control of solute concentration and water, for maintaining the osmotic pressure in the body fluids in an organism is called osmoregulation. When there is an increase in the concentration of any of the solute or decrease in the water amount in the cell, the osmoregulation is disturbed. Scientists exposed freshwater bony fish (Prochilodus lineatus) exposed to water with high aluminum level and another set of fish that was exposed to water with normal aluminum levels (control). The results of the data are shown in graph below:

With regard to fluid movement between body fluid compartments, what effect does oral/parenteral administration of a hypotonic NaCl solution (0.45% NaCl, 145 mOsm/kg) have on the volume & osmolality of the extracellular fluid compartment (ECF), and on the volume & osmolality of the intracellular fluid compartment (ICF)? Clearly explain your reasoning
The immediate effect of ADH on the renal tubules of frogs and mice is the same, yet when ADH is secreted, frogs produce urine that is approximately isosmotic to their blood plasma, whereas mice produce urine far more concentrated than their blood plasma. Explain this difference in terms of the factors affecting osmosis in the kidneys of frogs and mice.
The kidneys of different species of amniotes differ widely in their ability to concentrate the urine. What determines the maximum osmolarity of the urine an animal's kidney can produce? Explain why.  (not to long)
