Chapter 44.3, Problem 3R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The mechanism of action of sarin poisoning.

Introduction:

The sarin is a synthetic organophosphate and was used as the chemical weapon for the mass destruction. It results in the paralysis of the lung muscles and victims die as a result of the asphyxiation upon binding to even a small amount of the compound. Sarin is a colorless and odorless liquid and binds to the enzyme acetylcholinesterase irreversibly as a result of which the victims die due to asphyxiation.

Caffeine prolongs the life span of acetylcholine molecules in the motor junctions. Explain how this fact is related to caffeine’s tendency to cause jitters, such as hand tremors and other small involuntary contractions.
cobra venom has an enzyme called phospholipase II. Explain how this enzyme destroys the cell walls of erythrocytes when the poison enters the blood.
Organophosphate poisoning is a result of excess acetylcholine at different nerves and receptors in the body because acetylcholinesterase is blocked. Please provide rational to explain how the binding of organophosphate with serine in the acetylcholinesterase enzyme leads to excess accumulation of acetylcholine.
