Chapter 45, Problem 13TYK
Summary Introduction
To review:
Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease, may develop into cats, dogs, and humans. Individuals suffering with the disease experience severe fatigue with even small levels of exertion, drooping of facial muscles, and trouble keeping their eyelids open.
Introduction:
Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular type of autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease is a medical condition in which antibodies are formed against self-molecules in the cell, mostly against the receptors. The antibodies are formed against acetylcholine receptors in the synapse of neurons and muscle cells.

An experiment tested the hypothesis that exposure to pesticides decreases immune function in tadpoles. The researchers raised tadpoles in groups, in containers of the same size in a room with consistent temperature and lighting. They exposed some tadpoles to no pesticides, some to low pesticide levels, and some to high pesticide levels, and then measured the density of white blood cells (immune cells) in the tadpoles.

When T cells are activated by recognizing peptide:MHC complexes on dendritic cells in the lymph node, they up-regulate the receptor CD69. For T cells expressing a given T-cell receptor, the initial strength of the T-cell receptor signal can be modulated by varying the number of peptide:MHC complexes on the dendritic cells, or by varying the affinity with which the T cell-receptor binds to the peptide:MHC complexes. As a result, T cells stimulated with stronger T-cell receptor signals will maintain high expression of CD69 for one or two days longer that if those same T cells were stimulated with weaker T-cell receptor signals. Therefore, T cells stimulated with weaker T-cell receptor signals are likely to:
Die by apoptosis
Undergo more rounds of proliferation that T cells stimulated with stronger T-cell receptor signals
Migrate to the B-cell zones of the lymph node
Have reduced effector functions, such as cytokine production
Egress from the lymph node 1–2 days earlier than T cells…

For an animal's immune system to work properly, certain cells must be able to recognize other specific types of cells, so that they can bind to and communicate with them. For example, dendritic cells must be able to recognize and interact with T-cells, but they do not need to recognize adipocyte cells.
