Chapter 48, Problem 3Q
Summary Introduction

To review:

The hypothesis that the fluttering of spiracles might help in preventing the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) from reaching a toxic level is viable or not.

Given:

Researchers exposed pupae to a different level of atmospheric oxygen (O2) to study the activities of spiracles in differing atmospheric conditions and the effects this might have on the rate of carbon dioxide (CO2) release and O2 concentrations. They then measured levels of CO2 release and O2 concentrations during the fluttering stage. The results are depicted in the graphs shown below:

EBK LIFE: THE SCIENCE OF BIOLOGY, Chapter 48, Problem 3Q

Introduction:

Primary respiratory organ of insect is trachea, which branches across the body of the insect. Trachea helps in gaseous exchange that is the exchange of CO2 and O2. The intake and outgoing of the gases are maintained by spiracles. The spiracles close and open the trachea or flutters according to need.

Explain why each choice (a-d) is correct or incorrect. A flu vaccine is needed seasonally to be effective but a polio vaccine is only needed once.  The best explanation of this is a. Flu vaccine is substantially weaker than the polio vaccine. b. The polio virus is substantially weaker than the flu virus. c. Exposure to flu vaccine produces no memory cells from proliferating B lymphocytes. d. The flu has several strains that change seasonally.
Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion  Choose the 1 incorrect answer:   A. The newest FDA approved antimalarial drug is Tafenoquine and it will kill the hypnozoite stage of Plasmodium vivaxbut it can cause hemolytic anemia in people missing the enzyme G6PD.   B. There is no FDA malaria vaccine that has been approved for people 18 to 95 years of age in the world today.   C. There is very good long lasting immunity for at least 20 years (due to long lasting memory cells) for human malaria in a traveler that acquires the infection once in Africa (on a one week vacation) then never gets bitten by infected mosquitoes again for the next 40 years.   D. Plasmodium falciparum is the deadliest species of malaria.
Research has stated that there are factors that could affect the efficacy and duration of mosquito repellants on our skins. State at least 3 factors that could decrease or influence the efficacies of topical mosquito repellants and explain.
