The lung is surrounded by pleural membranes which helps in the inflation of lung. The inflation of lung is important for air to move inside and outside of the alveoli. Due to the puncturing of the chest, the lung is collapsed as it is not able to inflate properly and alveoli lose the ability to exchange gases.
