To determine:
The reason to inoculate urinary specimen in MacConkey.
Introduction:
Bacteria are biological cells that are prokaryotic in nature. They are the first living form to occur on the Earth and are found in most of the habitats. The length of bacteria varies a lot and they can be rod, spherical, or spiral in shape.
Explanation of Solution
MacConkey is a differential solid media used for the isolation of enteric gram-negative bacteria only. Its agar contains bile-salt neutral red-lactose. The purpose of bile salt and crystal violet in MacConkey is to inhibit the growth of fastidious gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria. The bacteria that harm the urinary tract and are responsible for urinary tract infections are mostly enteric gram-negative bacteria. So, for inoculation of urinary specimen, MacConkey agar is used.
The bacteria responsible for urinary infections are enteric gram-negative. So, urinary specimen are inoculated in MacConkey agar.
