Concept introduction:
Mixed Costs:
There are three types of costs according to the unit of production; Variable, Fixed and Mixed. Variable costs change proportionally with the number of units produced and variable cost per unit remains constant. Fixed Cost remains same in totality irrespective of the number of units produced.
The mixed cost is the mix of variable and fixed cost, some of its part is fixed and some variable.
High-Low Method:
This method is used to determine the fixed as well as variable part of the mixed cost. The formula for calculation of variable cost per unit is as follows:
The formula to calculate the Fixed Cost is as follows:
To calculate:
The Total Fixed operating costs and Variable operating cost per unit

- The Chocolate Baker specializes in chocolate baked goods. The firm has long assessed the profitability of a product line by comparing revenues to the cost of goods sold. However, Barry White, the firms new accountant, wants to use an activity-based costing system that takes into consideration the cost of the delivery person. Following are activity and cost information relating to two of Chocolate Bakers major products: Using activity-based costing, which of the following statements is correct? a. The muffins are 2,000 more profitable. b. The cheesecakes are 75 more profitable. c. The muffins are 1,925 more profitable. d. The muffins have a higher profitability as a percentage of sales and, therefore, are more advantageous.arrow_forwardBasu Company produces two types of sleds for playing in the snow: basic sled and aerosled. The projected income for the coming year, segmented by product line, follows: The selling prices are 30 for the basic sled and 60 for the aerosled. (Round break-even packages and break-even units to the nearest whole unit.) Required: 1. Compute the number of units of each product that must be sold for Basu to break even. 2. Assume that the marketing manager changes the sales mix of the two products so that the ratio is five basic sleds to three aerosleds. Repeat Requirement 1. 3. CONCEPTUAL CONNECTION Refer to the original data. Suppose that Basu can increase the sales of aerosleds with increased advertising. The extra advertising would cost an additional 195,000, and some of the potential purchasers of basic sleds would switch to aerosleds. In total, sales of aerosleds would increase by 12,000 units, and sales of basic sleds would decrease by 5,000 units. Would Basu be better off with this strategy?arrow_forwardBumblebee Mobiles manufactures a line of cell phones. The management has identified the following overhead costs and related cost drivers for the coming year. The following were incurred in manufacturing two of their cell phones, Bubble and Burst, during the first quarter. REQUIREMENT Review the worksheet called ABC that follows these requirements. You have been asked to determine the cost of each product using an activity-based cost system. Note that the problem information is already entered into the Data Section of the ABC worksheet.arrow_forward
- Windows is a small company that installs windows. Its cost structure is as follows: LOADING... (Click the icon to view the cost structure.) Traylor Windows' breakeven revenues is $1,870,000 and breakeven units is 3,400. Calculate the margin of safety in units and dollars and the margin of safety percentage if Traylor Windows expects to sell 3,600 windows in the year. Begin with calculating the margin of safety in dollars. Determine the formula to calculate the margin of safety in dollars. Then, enter the amounts and calculate the margin of safety in dollars. Budgeted revenue - Breakeven revenue = Margin of safety in dollars - = Next, determine the formula, enter the amounts, and calculate the margin of safety in units. Budgeted units - Breakeven units = Margin of safety in units - = Finally, calculate the margin of safety percentage if…arrow_forwardCost Estimation; High-Low Method; MAPE Horton Manufacturing Inc. produces blinds and other window treatments for residential homes and offices. The owner is concerned about the maintenance costs for the production machinery because maintenance costs for the previous fiscal year were higher than he expected. The owner has asked you to assist in estimating future maintenance costs to better predict the firm’s profitability. Together, you have determined that the best cost driver for maintenance costs is machine hours. The data from the previous fiscal year for maintenance costs and machine hours follow: Month Maintenance Costs Machine Hours 1 $2,625 1,499 2 2,670 1,590 3 2,720 1,605 4 2,822 1,655 5 2,855 1,775 6 3,005 1,880 7 2,865 1,785 8 2,905 1,805 9 2,780 1,695 10…arrow_forwardNormandy Office Products (NOP) makes two types of office desks, Manager and Executive. The Executive model is adjustable using electric motors and is made with upgraded materials. The manufacturing process for the Executive model is more complex than that for the Manager model, requiring more frequent inspections and shorter production runs. The Manager model is a basic desk, using good, but easy to work with, materials, and is simpler to manufacture. NOP’s results for the last fiscal year are shown in the following statement.
