Chapter 5, Problem 4.1GAP
To determine
Concept introduction:
Variable Cost: Variable cost are those cost which directly varies when the output of material changes. Variable cost same on per unit basis. When output increases it increases and when output decreases it decreases.
Fixed Cost: Fixed cost is those cost which have no effect when there is change in output. Fixed cost remains same in totality. There is no effect on the fixed cost when output changes it remains same always in totality.
Mixed Cost: It is the cost which contains both fixed and variable cost. In mixed cost a part of variable and a part of fixed cost presents it also called semi-variable or semi-fixed cost.
To complete:
Prepare the cost data table.

Course Objectives:
Compute sales units given operating income, selling price and variable cost per unit.
Prepare a contribution margin income statement, clearly showing contribution
Use CVP analysis to compute breakeven point and margin of safety
Analyze the impact which changes in sales volume and total fixed costs will have on the breakeven point, margin of safety and operating income
Explain the impact of errors such as the omission of fixed on the decision making process.
Darius Manufacturing Company manufactures and sells parts for various musical gadgets. The business earned Operating Income of $420,000 in 2018, when selling price per unit was $200 and the president of Darius is under pressure to increase operating income in 2019 and is therefore considering the implementation of strategies geared at increasing revenues. Data for variable cost per unit and total fixed costs were as follows:
Variable expenses per unit:
Direct Material
$20…
Cost Relationships The following costs are for Optical View Inc., a contact lens manufacturer:
Required
Calculate and graph total costs, the total variable cost, and total fixed cost.
For each level of output calculate the per-unit total cost, per-unit variable cost, and per-unit fixed cost.
Using the results from requirement 2, graph the per-unit total cost, per-unit variable cost, and per-unit fixed cost, and discuss the behavior of the per-unit costs over the given output levels.
Classifying costs
Wheels, Inc. manufactures wheels for bicycles, tricycles, and scooters. For each cost given below, determine if the cost is a product cost or a period cost. If the cost is a product cost, further determine if the cost is direct materials (DM), direct labor (DL), or manufacturing overhead (MOH) and then determine if the product cost is a prime cost, conversion cost, or both. If the cost is a period cost, further determine if the cost is a selling expense or administrative expense (Admin). Cost (a) is answered as a guide

- Carolina Yachts builds custom yachts in its production factory in South Carolina. Once complete, these yachts must be shipped to the dealership. They have collected this shipping cost data: Prepare a scatter graph of the shipping data. Plot cost on the vertical axis and yachts shipped on the horizontal axis. Is the relationship between shipping costs and unit shipped approximately linear? Draw a straight line through the scatter graph. Using the high-low method, create the cost formula for Carolina Yachts shipping costs. The least-squares regression method was used and the analysis resulted in this cost equation: Y= 4,000+ 1,275x. Comment on the accuracy of your high-low method estimation. What would you estimate shipping costs to be if Carolina Yachts shipped 10 yachts in a single month? Use the cost formula you obtained in part B. Comment on how accurately this is reflected by the scatter graph you constructed. What factors other than number of yachts shipped do you think could affect Carolina Yachts shipping expense?
