Concept introduction:
Sephadex is the trade name for the carbohydrate
In chromatographic techniques, the column generally contains gel particles in the form of porous beads that help in the separation of molecules on the basis of their molecular weight or size. The exclusion limit of the porous gel particles or beads is defined as the size or molecular weight (MW) beyond which molecules often elute in the same void volume of the column as they cannot enter the beads due to their relatively large size.

- REFLECT AND APPLY Argue logically that the urea cycle should not have evolved. Then, logically counter your argument.arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY Why is it useful to plot rate data for enzymatic reactions as a straight line rather than as a curve?arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY Why is it necessary or advantageous for the body to make zymogens?arrow_forward

Hint: There are two effects.arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY Why can we say that having a pure non- competitive inhibitor present is similar to just having less enzyme present?arrow_forward
- REFLECT AND APPLY Why is it somewhat misleading to study bio- chemical pathways separately?arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY How is it advantageous for animals to convert ingested starch to glucose and then to incorporate the glucose into glycogen?arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY List two classes of compounds derived from arachidonic acid. Suggest some reasons for the amount of biomedical research devoted to these compounds.arrow_forward
- REFLECT AND APPLY Given the nature of the hormonal activation of lipases, what carbohydrate pathways would be activated or inhibited under the same conditions?arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY When we compare the binding of I and of S to the enzyme in a mixed noncompetitive inhibitor, we assumed that the binding of I decreased the affinity of the enzyme for S. What would happen if the opposite were true?arrow_forwardREFLECT AND APPLY (a) Where in an earlier chapter have we en- countered something comparable to the action of the acyl carrier protein (ACP) of fatty acid synthesis? (b) What is a critical feature of the action of the ACP?arrow_forward
