Interpretation:
If the precipitation reaction occurs when mixing the given reactants, then both the balanced equation and the net ionic equation should be determined for the reaction.
Concept introduction:
In a balanced equation the number of atoms of each element as a reactant is equal to the number of atoms of that element as a product.
Coefficient is a number placed before a formula in a chemical equation.
A balanced equation should be obeying the law of conservation of mass. “Law of conservation of mass” states that, the number of atoms remains constant throughout the reaction, simply it can be stated as follows, “during a
A precipitation reaction takes place when two solutions of well soluble substances together form a poorly soluble salt.
Ionic equation is an equation in which ions are explicitly shown.
Spectator ions are the ion that appears unchanged on both sides of a reaction arrow.
Net ionic equation is the chemical equation for a reaction which lists only those species participating in the reaction.
To write the net ionic equation, steps mentioned below must be followed.
- Write the balanced molecular equation
- Write the ionic equation showing the strong electrolytes completely dissociated into cations and anions.
- Cancel the spectator ions on both sides of the ionic equation.
- Check that charges and number of atoms are balanced in the net ionic equation.
