A fertilizer manufacturer has to fulfill supply contracts to its two main customers (650 tons to Customer A and 800 tons to Customer B). It can meet this demand by shipping existing inventory from any of its three warehouses. Warehouse 1
has 400 tons of inventory onhand, Warehouse 2 (W2) has 500 tons, and Warehouse 3 (W3) has 600 tons. The company would like to arrange the shipping for the lowest cost possible, where the per-ton transit costs are as follows:
W 1
W 2
W 3

Write the objective function and the constraint in equations. Let V;= tons shipped to customer i from warehouse j, and so on. For example, VA1 = tons shipped to customer A from warehouse W1.
This exercise contains only parts b, c, d, e, and f.

A refiner in city Q serves four customers near city W and maintains consignment inventory (owned by the refiner) at each location. Currently, the refiner uses TL (truckload) transportation to deliver separately to each customer. Each truck costs $(740) plus $(309) per stop. The refiner is considering aggregating deliveries to city W on a single truck. The demand of the first customer is 75 tons a year, the demand of the second customer is 30 tons per year, and the demand of the third and fourth customers is 10 tons per year. The product cost is $8,000 per ton, and it uses a holding cost of
(24)%. The truck capacity is 20 tons.
a. What is the optimal delivery policy to each customer if the refiner ships separately to each of them? What is the annual total inventory-related cost?
b. What is the optimal delivery policy to each customer if the refiner aggregates shipments to each of the four customers on every truck that goes to city W? What…
The Sure To Peal Paint Company stores all its metal compressed gas containers in a warehouse. These long cylindrical metal tanks contain various gases used in manufacturing cans of spray paint. The gas tanks are delivered to the warehouse by truck. Two receiving dock workers unload the containers from the delivery trucks and place them on four wheel trucks. Two materials handlers are responsible for pushing the loaded trucks into the warehouse, unloading the tanks and setting them up on end. The two materials handlers spend a major portion of their day moving loads of the gas tanks into the warehouse and placing them into the proper storage locations. In total, there are five different types of gases that in equal proportion make up 98% of all gas handled.
Question: Management would like to identify a better way to handle these gas tanks. How can the handling operation be improved?

- Five to six times a year, Kicker puts on tent sales in various cities throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding states. The tent sales are designed to show Kicker customers new products, engender enthusiasm about those products, and sell soon to be out-of-date products at greatly reduced prices. Each tent sale lasts one day and requires parking lot space to set up the Kicker semitrailer; a couple of show cars; a disc jockey playing music; a tent to sell Kicker merchandise, distribute brochures, and so on. Last year, the Austin, TX tent sale was held in a corner of the parking lot outside the city exhibition hall where the automotive show was in progress. Because most customers were interested more in the new model cars than in the refurbishment of their current cars, foot traffic was low. In addition, customers did not want to carry speakers and amplifiers all the way back to where they had originally parked. Total direct costs for this tent sale were $14,300. From past experience, Fruit knows that 80% of all batches contain 10% (1 out of 10) defective chips, and 20% of all batches contain 50% (5 out of 10) defective chips. If a good (that is, 10% defective) batch of chips is sent to the next stage of production, processing costs of $4000 are incurred, and if a bad batch (50% defective) is sent on to the next stage of production, processing costs of $16000 are incurred. Fruit also has the alternative of reworking a batch at a cost of $4000. A reworked batch is sure to be a good batch. Alternatively, for a cost of $400, Fruit can test one chip from each batch in an attempt to determine whether the batch is defective. The mill produces rolls of the following two sizes: (1) 2,000 feet longand 12 feet wide, at a cost of $400 per roll, and (2) 2,000 feet long and 18 feet wide, ata cost of $900 per roll. - The Fly-Right Airplane Company builds small jet airplanes to sell to corporations for use by their executives. To meet the needs of these executives, the company's customers sometimes order a custom design of the airplanes being purchased. When this occurs, a substantial start-up cost is incurred to initiate the production of these airplanes. Fly-Right has recently received purchase requests from three customers with short deadlines. However, because the company's production facilities already are almost completely tied up filling previous orders, it will not be able to accept all three orders. Therefore, a decision now needs to be made on the number of airplanes the company will agree to produce (if any) for each of the three customers. The relevant data are given in the next table. The first row gives the start-up cost required to initiate the production of the airplanes for each customer. The owners have decided to update the software used for tracking, shipping, receiving, and inventory. Fifteen computers need to be updated. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Each computer must be updated manually by one of two trained employees, both of whom must be borrowed from other managers. The update procedure consumes 4 hours of the updater's time and generates an additional 1.5 hours of computer downtime. The work must be performed at a central loading station, away from the current location of the computer. However, this track of forestland is ten miles to their north, and there are no roads connecting the tract of land to their facility. They have also acquired a narrow (120 foot wide) ten-mile strip of land connecting this tract of timber to their processing facility. That is an interesting question. Suppose that you analyze this simple transportation problem using the probit model.
