Concept explainers
Here we celebrate the power of algebra as a powerful way of finding unknown quantities by naming them, of expressing infinitely many relationships and connections clearly and succinctly, and of uncovering pattern and structure.
Painting Möbius. A fraternity has a large canvas banner shaped like a Möbius band the entire surface of which is painted with the school colors. The band was crcatcd using canvas that measured 3 feet by 20 feet, with no overlap when the ends were stitched together. One year, the Board of Trustees decides to change the school colors to all new colors, so the frat boys have to repaint the entire band. How many square feet of canvas must be covered with paint?

- A piece in the shape of a pyramid with a regular octagon (eight sided) base is machined from a solid block of bronze. Each side of the octagon base is 9.36 inches long. The height of the piece is 7.08 inches. The octagon base area 4.829, where s is the length of a side of the octagon. a. Determine the volume of the piece. Round the answer to the nearest cubic inch. b. Determine the weight of the piece. Round the answer to the nearest pound. Note: One cubic foot of the bronze used weighs 547.9 pounds per cubic foot.arrow_forwardSolve these prism and cylinder exercises. Where necessary, round the answers to 2 decimal places unless otherwise specified. A vessel in the shape of a right circular cone has a capacity of 0.690 liter. The base diameter is 12.30 centimeters. What is the height of the vessel? One liter contains 1000 cubic centimeters.arrow_forwardSolve these prism and cylinder exercises. Where necessary, round the answers to 2 decimal places unless otherwise specified. A solid brass casting in the shape of a right circular cone has a base diameter of 4.36 inches and a height of 3.94 inches. Find the weight of the casting. Brass weighs 0.302 pound per cubic inch.arrow_forward
- Solve these prism and cylinder exercises. Where necessary, round the answers to 2 decimal places unless otherwise specified. The frustum of a right circular cone has a larger base area of 40.0 square centimeters and a smaller base area of 19.0 square centimeters. The height is 22.0 centimeters. Find the volume. Round the answer to the nearest cubic centimeter.arrow_forwardA piece in the shape of a frustum of a pyramid with regular octagon bases is 23.84 centimeters high. The length of each side of the larger base is 8.17 centimeters, and the length of each side of the smaller base is 6.77 centimeters. If a side (s) of a regular octagon is known, its area (A) can be computed by the formula A4.828s2 . Determine the volume of the piece. Round the answer to the nearest cubic centimeter.arrow_forwardForming a pen We want to form a rectangle pen of area 100 square feet. One side of the pen is to be formed by an existing buliding and the other three sides by a fence see Figure 2.106. Let W be the length, in feet, of the sides of the rectangle perpendicular to the buliding, and let L be the length, in feet, of the other side. Figure 2.106 a.Find a formula for the total amount of fence needed in terms of W and L b. Express, as an equation involving W and L, the requirement that the area be 100 square feet. c.Solve the equation you found in part b for L. d.Use your answers to parts a and c to find a formula for F, the total amount, in feet, of fence needed, as a function of W alone. e.Make a graph of F versus W. f.Determine the dimension of the rectangle that requires a minimum amount of fence.arrow_forward
- A piece shown by the shaded portion is to be cut from a square plate 128 millimeters on a side. a. Compute the area of the piece to be cut. Round the answer to the nearest square millimeter. b. After cutting the piece, determine the percentage of the plate that will be wasted.arrow_forwardA seamless brass tube and brass flange assembly is shown. The tube is pressed fit into the full 1.250-inch plate thickness. The brass used weighs 0.305 pound per cubic inch. Find the total weight of the assembly. Round the answer to the nearest tenth pound.arrow_forward
