Introduction:

The members belonging to Kingdom Fungi are characterized by the presence of chitin in their cell wall and ergosterol in their cell membrane. All fungi are heterotrophs and saprobes, i.e., they cannot synthesize their own food and rely on dead and decaying organisms to get nutrients. Fungi can digest a great variety of substrates, including rubber and petroleum products.
