Introduction:

Fungi are organisms that have eukaryotic cells with special compounds like chitin in cell wall and ergosterol in cell membranes. All fungi are heterotrophic, i.e., they acquire nutrients from other sources. Most fungi are saprobes, i.e., they obtain nutrition from dead and decaying plants and animals in soil or aquatic habitat. Few fungi are parasitic and only survive inside a host. Fungi are capable of digesting a wide array of substrates, including food, petroleum products, rubber and wood.
