Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
Three factors that contribute for making coal a dirty fuel has to be listed out.
Concept Introduction:
A fuel is a substance which releases energy in the form of heat while undergoing combustion. Hydrocarbons which have high heats of combustion make it a best fuel.
The general equation for the complete combustion of a hydrocarbon is written below,
Coal is a good fuel becouse it is completely made up of carbon atoms. It is a fossil fuel.
Coals can be classified and graded according to the carbon percent and the impurity percent such as sulfur.
Anthracite coal has high carbon content.
(b)
Interpretation:
In 2011, a newspaper columnist remarked that the idea of clean coal remain a distant dream. Check whether the dream of clean coal come any closer to being realized or not.
Concept Introduction:
Heat of combustion: It is also known as potential heat of fuel. Heat of combustion of carbon depends on its allotropic form.

- End-of-the-Pipe Control versus Pollution Prevention The marginal cost of reduction curve illustrated in Figure 4.5 assumes a particular approach to reducing pollution, often called end-of-the-pipe control. In other words, when we draw that upward-sloping MC curve, we assume that firms respond to regulation by maintaining the same basic production technology but adding on scrubbers or filters to clean up their emissions. Under these conditions, rising marginal costs of reduction are quite likely. However, suppose that firms radically overhaul their production technology, so that they completely eliminate emissions. This is known as a “pollution prevention” strategy. An example might be a jeweler, who in the face of regulation adopts a closed-loop production system. This is one in which all mineral waste products are recovered from recycled wastewater and then reused. What would the marginal cost of reduction diagram look like in this case? a.
