Describe the energy transformations that take place when a skier starts skiing down a hill, but after a time is brought to rest by striking a snowdrift.
Answer to Problem 22Q
Solution:
The gravitational potential energy that it has at the beginning is gradually transformed into kinetic energy. When it reaches the ground, its kinetic energy is maximum and its potential energy is zero. Then that kinetic energy is transformed into heat energy by friction when it hits the snowdrift until it comes to rest.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
A skier starts skiing down a hill, but after a time is brought to rest by striking a snowdrift.
At the highest point of the hill, the skier is at rest and has maximum gravitational potential energy. Then, the skier begins to descend doing work with his body. That work is transformed into kinetic energy. The gravitational potential energy is gradually transformed into an increase in kinetic energy until, when it reaches the ground, the gravitational potential energy is zero and its kinetic energy is maximum. As the skier moves along the track he hits a snowdrift and his kinetic energy is transformed into heat energy due to friction until the skier stops.
