A final assembly plant for a certain automobile model is to have a capacity of 240,000 units annually. The plant will operate 50 weeks/yr, two shifts/day, 5 days/week, and 8.0 hours/shift. It will be divided into three departments:
(1) Body shop,
(2) paint shop,
(3) trim-chassis-final department.
The body shop welds the car bodies using robots, and the paint shop coats the bodies. Both of these departments are highly automated. Trim-chassis-final has no automation. There are 15.5 hours of direct labor content on each car in this department, where cars are moved by a continuous conveyor. Determine:
(a) Hourly production rate of the plant,
(b) number of workers and workstations required in trim-chassis-final if no automated stations are used, the average manning level is 2.5, balancing efficiency = 93%, proportion uptime = 95%, and a repositioning time of 0.15 min is allowed for each worker.
You work for a small shipping company and warehouse. The owners have decided to update the software used for tracking, shipping, receiving, and inventory. Fifteen computers need to be updated. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Each computer must be updated manually by one of two trained employees, both of whom must be borrowed from other managers. The update procedure consumes 4 hours of the updater's time and generates an additional 1.5 hours of computer downtime. The work must be performed at a central loading station, away from the current location of the computer.
How does the project portfolio management approach lead to enhanced strategic management for an organization and give an example how you woulduse this in a work place?
Furniture Face Lift refinishes old wood furniture. Their process for refinishing chairs has 9 workers and 4 stations. Each chair starts at the Stripping station, then goes to Priming, then to Painting and finally to Inspection. Where there are multiple workers within a station, each worker works independently on his/her own chair. Assume inventory buffers are allowed between each station.

- Mack’s guitar fabrication shop produces low cost, highly durable guitars for beginners. Typically, out of the 100 guitars that begin production each month, only 80 percent are considered good enough to sell. The other 20 percent are scrapped due to quality problems that are identified after they have completed the production process. Each guitar sells for $300. Because some of the production process is automated, each guitar only requires 10 labor hours. Labor is paid at $10/hour, materials cost is $40/guitar, and overhead is $2,000. a) Calculate the labor and multifactor productivities. b) After some study, the operations manager recommends 3 options to improve the company’s multifactor productivity: (1) increase the sales price by 10 percent, (2) improve quality so that only 10 percent are defective, or (3) reduce labor, material, and overhead costs by 10 percent. Which option has the greatest impact on the multifactor productivity measure?arrow_forwardThe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit of St Francis hospital has 2 MRI machines and sees two kinds of patients, "regular" patients and "contrast" patients. Regular patients require 15 minutes in an MRI machine whereas contrast patients take on average 25 minutes in an MRI machine. Over an 8-hour day, the MRI unit receives an average of 25 regular patients and 5 contrast patients. Convert the demand and capacity into "hours of work per day" to answer the following questions: (a) What is the implied utilization (as a %) of the MRI unit? % (Round your answer to whole number) Hint: First calculate the demand in hours of work per day: If there are 5 Contrast patients per day and each Contrast patient takes 25 minutes to 'process', how many 'minutes of work' are demanded every day from…arrow_forward
- A bank recently finished construction of a new building in the downtown business district. You have been asked to help them arrange the various departments of its check processing division to minimize the workflow (Summation LxD) in its operations. The movement of checks between departments is shown in the table below. Department 4 (the check distribution department) must be in the room with the elevator. Only lateral movement is allowed (no diagonal movement allowed) from the center of one department to the center of the destination department. Each department is 50 feet x 50 feet. The process begins with a solid rectangular block of aluminum that is used to make a single housing. A computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine drills into the block to make the metal “frame” of the housing. Each block requires 15 minutes of drilling. The frame is then chemically treated in a series of baths. There is ample capacity in the treating stage. Finally, a worker must manually attach the various buttons and components to the metal housing. This assembly takes 120 minutes per housing per worker and Aquatica has 6 workers trained to do this task. The CNC machine requires a 30-minute setup time before the production of a batch can begin. a. If the CNC machine produces 14 housings between setups, what would be its capacity (in housings per hour)? b. Assuming the process is supply-constrained, what is the utilization (as a number between 0 and 1) of the CNC machine if it operates in batches of 14 housings? c. Assuming…arrow_forward
- The Farm-4-Less tractor company produces a grain combine (GC) in addition to both a large (LT) and small size tractor (SM). Its production manager desires to produce to customer demand using a mixed-model production line. The current sequence of production, which is repeated 30 times during a shift, is SM-GC-SM-LT-SM-GC-LT-SM. A new machine isproduced every 2 minutes. The plant operates two 8-hour shifts. There is no downtime because the 4 hours between each shift are dedicated to maintenance and restocking raw material. Based on this information, answer the following questions.a. The capacities of each process step are given, and apply to production of either type of table, as shown in the flowchart. a. What is the capacity of the system, and what is thebottleneck? b. If olive trees are pruned every two weeks, output is increased. The pruning process, however, requires considerably more labor than permitting the olives to grow on their own and results in a smaller size olive. It also, though, permits olive trees to be spaced closer together. The yield of 1 barrel of olives by pruning requires 5 hours of labor and 1 acre of land. The production of a barrel of olives by the normal process requires only 2 labor hours but takes 2 acres of land. An olive grower has 250 hours of labor available and a total of 150 acres for growing. Because of the olive size difference, a barrel of olives produced on pruned trees sells for $20, whereas a barrel of regular olives has a market price of $30. The grower has determined that because of uncertain demand, no more than 40 barrels of pruned olives should be produced.
