Answer to Problem 1A

Some of the visual changes which indicate that a chemical reaction is taking place are color change of solution, evolution of colored gas, effervescence, formation of precipitates or solids from soluble substances etc.

Explanation of Solution

As in chemical reaction new substances are produced with different properties, often visual changes can be seen during the progress of the reaction.

For example, if a solid piece of sodium is added to ethyl alcohol (liquid) then evolution of hydrogen gas can be understood from the effervescence.

When aqueous solution of silver nitrate is allowed to react with aqueous solution of sodium chloride then a precipitate of silver chloride is produced.

When concentrated nitric acid is heated with copper turnings then reddish brown nitrogen dioxide evolves.

Thus visual changes indicate that a chemical reaction is taking place.
