To review:
In a certain type of leukemia treatment, all the stem cells are killed by radiation and chemotherapy. In this case, bone marrow transplantation is needed. Bone marrow cannot be transplanted from any donor. Determine the certain conditions that are necessary for the process of the bone marrow transplant.
Introduction:
Leukemia is a type of cancer, in which bone marrow is affected. Affected bone marrow produces the excess amount of WBCs (white blood cells) that cluster in the blood and hampers the normal activity of the body. The treatment of leukemia involves transplantation of bone marrow. Along with the transplantation, there are several other treatments that are performed in this disease. These treatments are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and cord blood transfusion.

- Which types of funding would be preferred for a cancer program and why?arrow_forwardExplain why a transplant might be dangerous to the health of a patient.arrow_forwardYou are working at a Stem cell transplantation center. Your job is to transplant autologous stem cells for leukemia. For this procedure, list the main steps that you will follow (Please pay attention to the disease and be more specific on the procedure).arrow_forward
- List several reasons why angiogenesis is a very active area for cancer therapy research.arrow_forwardPlatelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is, as its name suggests, stored in and secreted by platelets. Platelets release PDGF in the vicinity of wounds as part of their participation in the clotting response. PDGF, in turn, stimulates the proliferation of nearby fibroblasts, which help in the wound healing process. When, however, the PDGF gene is mutated or inappropriately expressed, it can lead to cancer. Why, then, does the wound healing response not lead to similar uncontrolled cell division?arrow_forwardOne of the major characteristics of cancer is uncontrolled proliferation of cells. There are several more characteristics of cancer, name TWO more:arrow_forward
- List 3 causes of cancer:arrow_forwardIn the term Wilms' tumor, Wilms' is an example of a: 1) nonconstructed term. 2) constructed term. 3) combining form. O 4) word root.arrow_forwardWhat rights does a cell donor have to stem cell lines or technologies created from cells they have donated? Should tissue donors share in the commercial potential and monetary awards of stem cell line created from their cells?arrow_forward
- Which therapy is associated with greatest risk of treatment-related leukemia?arrow_forwardSelect all of the sentences below that correctly describe the role of a healthy diet and lifestyle in cancer risk and progression. Select all that apply. A)Dietary supplements are definitively linked to lowering cancer risk. B)Consumption of processed meat containing nitrates and nitrites may increase a person’s risk of certain cancers. C)Grilling is a healthy cooking method; therefore, the consumption of all types of grilled meat will help reduce the risk of cancer. D)Folate may help reduce the incidence of colon cancer. E)Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, all of which help reduce the risk of certain cancers.arrow_forwardThe current way to gauge the effectiveness of chemotherapy is to track the size of the tumor. If the tumor shrinks, the chemotherapy is said to be "working." If cancer stem cells really do act the way we think they do, what will be the new way that the effectiveness of chemotherapy will be evaluated?arrow_forward
