Chapter 7, Problem 49P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Whether menthyl chloride or neomenthyl chloride reacts faster in the elimination reaction on treatment with sodium ethoxide in ethanol is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

>

Dehydrohalogenation reaction is the loss of hydrogen and a halogen from adjacent carbon atoms in an alkyl halide to form the most stable alkene by β eliminations.

>

E2 elimination reactions are favored whenever an alkyl halide is treated with a strong base.

>

In E2 elimination, the elimination takes place in a single step. In the first step, a strong base abstracts a β hydrogen atom ( C-2 ) in the alkyl halide concurrent with the loss of chloride from a α carbon atom ( C-1 ), to give the most stable alkene.

Explain this observation: Ethyl 3-phenylpropanoate (C6H5CH2CH2CO2CH2CH3) reacts with electrophiles to afford ortho- and para-disubstituted arenes, but ethyl 3-phenylprop-2-enoate (C6H5CH=CHCO2CH2CH3) reacts with electrophiles to afford meta- disubstituted arenes.
On reaction with hydrogen chloride, one of the trimethylcyclohexanols shown gives a single product, the other gives a mixture of two stereoisomers. Explain.
Which stereoisomer do you predict will undergo elimination on treatment with sodium ethoxide in ethanol at the faster rate?
