Question
Chapter 7, Problem 7.114QP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
To find if water molecule is linear whether it possesses polarity and has hydrogen bonding with one another.
Concept Introduction:
- Hydrogen bond takes place when hydrogen is bonded to strong electronegative atom like oxygen, nitrogen etc. The hydrogen bonding between two molecules is known as intermolecular hydrogen bonding and has strong association between the molecules.
- Dipole moment takes place when there is a difference in the electronegativity of atoms in a bond which results in charge separation. Dipole moment generates when the electrons in a bond is not equally shared resulting in the partial positive and partial negative charge on the corresponding atoms.

Why would you expect ammonia (NH3) to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules?
Describe the changes (if any) in potential energy and in kinetic energy among the molecules when gaseous PCl3 condenses to a liquid at a fixed temperature.
What phenomenon does hydrogen bonding in water create to enable certain insects to walk on puddles and other water surfaces? Would you expect liquid ammonia to produce this phenomenon to the same extent? Why (not)? Assuming these insects wouldn’t be bothered by the much lower temperature, would you expect their attempts to walk on liquid ammonia to be successful?
