Monochromators are optical devices which transmit a wide range of available wavelengths, a mechanically selectable narrow wavelength band. These could be
Answer to Problem 7.1QAP
Over a certain spectral range, the output wavelength is continuously variable in case of prism monochromator and so, the slit width also must be varied.
Explanation of Solution
The wavelength, that is the output keeps changing continuously for a considerable spectral range in case of a prism monochromator while in case of a grating monochromator, the output wavelength remains same, as the radiation is dispersed in the component wavelength.
As the output wavelength keeps varying, the slit width is also required to be varied in case of a prism monochromator in order to keep the effective wavelength constant which is not needed in case of a grating monochromator.
Slit width must be varied to get constant effective wavelength in case of prism monochromator while it is almost same in case of grating monochromator.

PRINCIPLES OF INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS
- Why are wavlength maxima different for UV-Vis and Fluorescence?arrow_forwardDistinguish between voltammetry and amperometryarrow_forwardWhen analyzing a selution component by UV-visible spectrophotometry. we prepare solutions with a range of concentrations by serial dilution. Why do we need to analyze a range of solutions? To allow multiple determinations of absorbance at different wavelengths and different concentrations To provide more than one determination of absorbance for a given concentration To see how absorbance varies with concentration To ensure that the linear relationship between absorbarce and concentrasion is velid for a range of concentrations.arrow_forward
- How would the position of a spectral line change as the distance L between the grating and the light source is increased?arrow_forwardWhich of the following statement is incorrect? The quality of grating of the monochromator affects the resolution of two closely spaced wavelengths in a spectrum. OICP (Inductively coupled plasma) is commonly used in atomic emission spectrometry. Cuvette is generally used for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) as the sample cell. The measurement in fluorescence spectrometry is generally more sensitive than absorption spectrometry.arrow_forwardStandard solutions of a chemical species with different concentrations are analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The absorbance values obtained are plotted against concentration and the slope of the drawn calibration line is calculated as 55400. Since a 0.5 cm cuvette is used in this analysis, calculate the molar absorptivity coefficient of the analyzed species.arrow_forward

Assuming that the resultant particles are strain freeand the peak broadening detected in the measurement with Cu-K radiation (λ=0.154 nm) arises onlyfrom variation of size of the crystallites, estimate the peak width (the value of FWHM) of the (110) plane.arrow_forwardI need the answer as soon as possiblearrow_forward

If the concentration is doubled what would be the absorbance and thepercentage transmittance of the new solution?arrow_forwardI) Diamond crystallises in a face-centred cubic structure with a = 3.5625 Å. Calculate the d-spacing and peak position of the first allowed peak (i.e. the peak with the lowest hkl value that meets the selection rules) using a wavelength of 0.71073 Å. II) A solvothermal synthesis gave rise to a mixture of two crystalline phases: one phase consists of 50-65 μm octahedral crystallites while the other phase consists of 150-180 μm hexagonal plates.
