Recently there have been concerns about the effects of phthalates on the devel- opment of the male reproductive system. Phthalates are common ingredients in many plastics. In a pilot study a researcher gave pregnant rats daily doses of 750 mg/kg of body weight of DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) throughout the period when their pups’ sexual organs were developing. The newly born male rat pups were sacrificed and their seminal vesicles were dissected and weighed. Below are the weights for the eight males (in mg).

If untreated newborn males have a mean of 1700 mg, can you say that rats exposed to DHEP in utero have a significantly lower weight?
It is hypothesized that there are fluctuations in norepinephrine (NE) levels which
accompany fluctuations in affect with bipolar affective disorder (manic-depressive
illness). Thus, during depressive states, NE levels drop; during manic states, NE levels
increase. To test this relationship, researchers measured the level of NE by measuring the
metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG in micro gram per 24 hour) in the
patient's urine experiencing varying levels of mania/depression. Increased levels of
MHPG are correlated with increased metabolism (thus higher levels) of central nervous
system NE. Levels of mania/depression were also recorded on a scale with a low score
indicating increased mania and a high score increased depression. The data is provided
below.

Major birth defects occurred in 31 cases when the women took folic acid and in 47 cases when the women did not. a.
