Concept explainers
To Explain: Only certain materials are magnetic.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Magnets attract other magnets and some metals like iron, cobalt and nickel.
Every element has electrons with magnetic moment but in most elements, the magnetic moments cancel out. In elements where the magnetic moments of electrons do not cancel out, each atom of the element behaves like a magnet and possesses magnetic properties. These elements are therefore attracted by magnets.
Conclusion:
Atoms of only certain elements possess magnetic properties. Those elements form magnetic materials.
