Chapter 7.3, Problem 2RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation :

The factor that can be changed while balancing a chemical equation from coefficients or subscripts needs to be identified.

Concept Introduction :

Coefficients in chemical equation represent the moles of each participant whereas the subscripts represent the number of each atom present in a molecule.

Answer to Problem 2RQ

Coefficients can be changed as changing the subscripts will change the formula of the compound.

Explanation of Solution

A reaction can be balanced if the number of each atom is kept same in both the sides. This is done by considering all the atoms involved in the reaction. Number of atoms can be adjusted by adjusting the coefficients (moles) of involved species keeping the chemical formula same. But if the subscripts are changed then number of each atoms can be made same however the formula of compound will change.

Conclusion

Thus while balancing a chemical reaction coefficients are changed not the subscripts.
